a r t i s t & c u r a t o r

Wynter Whiteside is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design Fine Arts Program, with independent studies in Contemporary Art, and study abroad at Burren College of Art, Ballyvaughn, Ireland.

During her emergence from the Columbus gallery scene, Wynter undertook the curation of several uniquely themed, multimedia gallery exhibits, featuring both established and emerging artists, performers and musicians. The resulting critical acclaim, as well as Wynter's genuine passion for discovering new talent, has furthered her professional career as an independent curator.

Her current project, Sugarcraft, is an international exhibition that symphonizes the worlds of Fine Art, Contemporary Fine Craft, and the Culinary Arts. Sugarcraft has evolved, from an invitation to guest curate from the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, into a travelling exhibit featuring over forty artists. Sugarcraft will be hosted by Kasia Kay Art Projects, Chicago, IL in spring 2008, with other dates and venues pending.

Wynter is a featured artist in Sugarcraft. Her mixed media paint-based works have been featured in galleries throughout the Midwest including (most recently) at Urban Institute of Contemporary Art (MI), the Carnegie (KY), Roy G. Biv Gallery (OH), Mahan Gallery (OH), and Ohio Art League. Her work has appeared in several juried exhibitions, most notably by Claudine Ise (Wexner Center for the Arts), Joe Houston (Columbus Museum of Art), and Manifest Gallery (for Whimsical Muse, 2007). Wynter's works have also appeared in various experimental, nonprofit venues.

for
'cakewalk' series

This recent body of work (that I like to refer to as the 'cakewalk') playfully blends the notion of consumption and the self-indulgent nature of art. Fine Art mingles with Contemporary Fine Craft, dovetailing through the mediums of choice in this oeuvre. By decorating the various surfaces, I employ the vast rawness of bare canvas surface as a relief for the dollops of icing-like oil that engorge my palette knife, creating personal narratives. Through a joyful, child-like spontaneity and an experimental modus operandi, the multilayered mediums that I paint, embroider, or literally frost are a compelling factor in the act of mark
making. Negative space is employed in tandem with the positive, like a ghostly twin.

The aesthetics of confection and the ephemeral nature of life have anchored many of my works. In this series I have pushed this personal, yet universal motif to the next level, experimenting with the concept of personal memory and accepted modes of art-making. The "consumptive" role of the audience is part of the work itself, and in a sense these pieces are evanescent and urge the viewer to "eat" with their eyes. Through personally tailored art methods, I reveal my most personal thoughts through raw exposure, yet render them inscrutable through a veil of nectarine whimsy. Embroidery and bead work tender themselves in the raw hoops of their creation. Thread is wielded free-handedly as a protracted means of drawing, as the quick quirks of oil paint and mark-making are applied abreast, implying an undertone of self-gratification. Icing literally gilds the gallery infrastucture, blooming from the walls and enticing its audience with its hypersensuality.

Happily playing in my world full of illustrious inhabitants, ideal and metaphor- these counterparts coincide to confess my love of the medium itself, and through pure imaginative playfullness I reveal a world that I thrive in, through its diversity.
