One Night Stand The Menier Gallery Menier Chocolate Factory 51 Southwark St London SE1 1RU I’ve found that being able to describe the qualities of the figures I draw helps me to portray them visually so I always keep a notepad open on my desk as I work. Each drawing represents a different aspect of my idea of female perfection so I try to convey subject's size, movement and character to the viewer in an otherwise inanimate drawing and without betraying the natural mystery that each one possesses. I find inspiration from a variety of different sources, but particularly the work of Francisco Goya. My favorite Goya piece is “Giant” from 1818. This is an aquatint plate etched to a full black. The highlights are then brought forward by scraping into the plate with a scraper, like a “fake mezzotint”. Although Goya’s subject matter is quite different than mine, I am fascinated by the mystery and quiet power given to the immense figure being depicted. |
